The Chamber is the voice of businesses throughout Yukon.
As a member of the Oklahoma State Chamber, we keep addressed on Federal and State issues.
Additionally, the Chamber works closely with the City of Yukon and Canadian County elected and administrative leaders on key local issues.
September 7, 2010 Legislative Breakfast
Below are the topics discussed during the Tuesday, September 7, 2010 Yukon Chamber of Commerce Legislative Breakfast.
Coburn –
- C-Span has recorded one of Coburn’s town hall meetings. People are scared and concerned about what is going on in Washington.
- Tax cuts extension is drawing concerned too.
Lucas –
- Concerned about lame duck session and what outgoing members will try to do. Most likely items will be overridden.
- Lucas’ name was cleared from the ethic probe.
- An explanation of who the tax cuts will affect was discussed.
State Senate –
- Senator-elect Rob Johnson was present and just reported that he is getting ready for the session to start.
State House –
- For the next two months, elections will dominate the airwaves. Nothing else going on until after the elections.
- As for the elections, what happens on the national level will trickle down to the local levels.
- No word on the $119 million for teachers.
County Commissioner –
- Canadian County is growing and ranks in the top five counties in the state. Because of the growth, it is hard to keep up with the roads, protection, and school needs.
- A request was made to the school administration to join the commissioner in requesting ODOT to build a right turn lane on Route 66 south on to Yukon Parkway (Mustang Road) to alleviate potential traffic issues due to the new high school and other school reconfigurations.
- Discussed that when voters voted on the tax to build the Gary Miller Juvenile Center, the tax was earmarked for the Center and cannot be used for the proposed new county jail though some commissioner are trying to get the surplus money from the Center.
City –
- No City representative present.
School –
- A concern about cell phones in schools was discussed.
- Yukon test scores are higher than Mustangs.
- New high school is a showplace for Yukon.
Real Estate
- Seventy-eight days is the average for a home to be on the market to sale.
- Cheapest home is $54K, highest is $800K, and the average home is $97K.
On October 14th, a county wide candidate form will be held at the Palace Event Center.
The next Yukon Chamber of Commerce Legislative Breakfast will be on Tuesday, October 5, 2010.
The free continental breakfast will be held in the Mabel C. Fry Public Library, 1200 Lakeshore Drive located on the southeast corner of Highway 66 and Mustang Road.

Below are the topics discussed during the Tuesday, August 3, 2010 Yukon Chamber of Commerce Legislative Breakfast.
Coburn –
- The recent town hall meetings were well attended, plan to have more.
- Discussed the national debt.
- Bill was passed to start showing earmarks.
- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is studying effects of the dust that farm equipment is stirring up and material putting into the air.
- Crazy projects that tax dollars are being spent on.
Lucas –
- Oklahoma Congressmen are starting to post earmarks on their websites while most other legislators other are not doing.
- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) wants to regulate the farmers to death.
- Concerned about lame duck session coming up.
- House recently passes a terrible finance regulatory reform that will hurt the banks.
- House passed an energy bill that is not an energy bill.
- Congress has an eleven percent approval rate.
- Tax code has thirteen thousand pages that no one really knows what they are.
State Senate –
- Twenty percent staff cutback so response from Senators to constituents could be slow.
- Cuts in the budget have cut the Page program in half. (Pages are students with a unique educational opportunity to participate in the legislative process).
- Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) dust program is aiming at requiring farms to install water sprayers on the back of equipment to cut down on the dust. Construction equipment could also have requirement. State legislators will try and stop the program due to the cost.
- Most projects are on hold due to election campaigning.
State House –
- House of Representatives’ computer equipment is being upgraded.
- Conference travel has been suspended.
- A change to the House conference committee process is in progress to make the process more open to the public.
- Word on the street is that some are glad to see car commercials back on TV after the election so they can watch a person that can be trusted.
County Commissioner –
- The county jail is a big issue and will be having open meetings on the construction.
- Funding of the county jail is another issue. Looking at funds from the Gary Miller facility to finance jail.
City –
- Batch (concrete) plant (located at Main Street and Piedmont Road) dispersed.
School –
- School website has countdown counter of the completion of the new high school.
- ‘Future Forward’ is the school slogan for the 2010-2011 school year.
- Retirement and resignations have cut staff.
- School budget and how it works.
- Class size and teacher staffing.
