Police Department
The Director of Public Safety is also the Chief of Police. He oversees the Police Department, the Fire Department, and Emergency Management Services. The Police Department is made up of 37 sworn officers, three reserve officers, and 21 support staff.
The Yukon Police Department practices a pro-active approach to reducing crime by working with the community and using the principles of problem oriented policing. Yukon enjoys one of the lowest crime rates in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.
The new Yukon Police Station was completed in November 2008, with approximately 26,000 square feet dedicated to the Yukon Police Department, 911 Communications Center, and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) all conveniently housed within the station.
The EOC is made of 16 inches of solid concrete and is able to withstand an F5 tornado. During major emergencies, the EOC will be activated and all City departments can function within the state of the art center. Also within the Police department is a fully certified jail with eight cells and two holding areas, able to hold up to 32 prisoners.
The Yukon Communications Center handles about 40,000 calls annually. The Department has three divisions: Operations, Investigation & Youth, and Support Services. Some specialized functions within the Department are: Bicycle Patrol, Warrant with U.S. marshals, Drug Officer with the D.E.A., Joint Tactical Team, Firearms Range, Animal Control, and a School Resource Officer program.
The Yukon Police Department has two School Resource Officers located and dedicated to Yukon Schools. Community Affairs is also a big component in the Department’s Administration. Chief Wieczorek believes in having a strong partnership with the community and that the department’s programs serve as a bridge to its citizens and provide a great benefit to all.
Some of the police department’s outreach programs include: National Night Out, Senior Fair, Special Olympics, and Shop with a Cop.
In 2009 the Yukon Police Department made some major upgrades in addition to the completion of a new police station. Officers now have mobile laptop computers in their patrol cars; TASERs were purchased; a new emergency communications system was added to improve the 911 system; a mass alert notification system called Connect-CTY was implemented; and an anonymous text-a-tip program was added.
Any Yukon resident can register to join Yukon’s alert notification system. In cases of emergencies, severe weather, and other important messages relating to transportation and utilities, the city can notify you in the form of a voice recorded message, e-mail, or text message. Citizens can also text the police department with important crime tips. Text to CRIMES (274637) with the keyword YPD followed by your message. It is totally anonymous; the sender’s phone number and location is encrypted. The texted tips are monitored 24 hours a day. It is to be used for tips only, not emergency calls. If you wish to leave a voice recording, call the hotline at 405-354-7583.
The Yukon Police Department also works closely with neighborhood watch groups to help reduce crime. You can create a Neighborhood watch group by calling the Yukon Police Department.
