The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining the City of Yukon’s infrastructure, which includes streets, bridges, drainage, and traffic control mechanisms, as well as water and waste water operations. The department’s Street Division, Water & Waste Water Division and Fleet Maintenance Division form a cohesive departmental team that ensures Yukon citizens receive the best customer service.
The Street Division has 14 employees who maintain the city’s 308 lane miles of roads, approximately 375 right‐of‐way acres and the drainage structures within the city. Street signage, traffic control devices, tree trimming and edging are other assigned duties. Whether it’s a winter storm, flood or natural disaster, the team will respond to protect and assist Yukon citizens.
Each year, citizens in Yukon use approximately 1 billion gallons of water. The Water & Waste Water Division is a 10 person team responsible for the City of Yukon’s water and waste water systems. The team is assisted by Veolia Water, which is contracted by the City of Yukon to operate the waste water treatment plant, 10 lift stations, three booster stations and 15 water wells. Yukon has over 8,500 water connections, 1.2 million feet of water line and approximately 847,000 feet of sewer line.
Fleet Maintenance has a staff of four mechanics who maintain 130 city vehicles, 50 pieces of heavy equipment, 35 mowers and small equipment items, as well as nine generators.
